Orthopedic Trauma Surgery
An injury that occurs when the body encounters a resistance that the tissues and joints cannot withstand during an activity is called a trauma. Trauma injuries such as bone fractures, muscle injuries, and limb amputations are particularly relevant to the field of orthopedics.
Injuries resulting from trauma can cause temporary or permanent loss of function, as well as psychological and other problems. To prevent such situations, the first aid and treatment after trauma must be done quickly. Rapid intervention is especially life-saving in injuries such as limb loss and fractures.
The most common causes of injuries are:
- Falls
- Car accidents
- Sports accidents
- Assault
- Ankle sprains
- Playground accidents in children
- Several possible symptoms may accompany the trauma depending on which part of the body is affected in the resulting trauma.
The most commonly seen symptoms:
- Swelling in the area of the trauma
- Sensitivity and immobility in the area of tissue damage
- Bruising and discoloration
- Numbness and tingling sensation
- Bleeding due to injury
- Dislocated bone indicates orthopedic trauma.
The patient's history and detailed examination form the first step of trauma surgery. Radiography, MRI, CT, and ultrasound are imaging techniques that assist in diagnosis.
Quick interventions performed in well-equipped and fully equipped operating rooms reduce the complications that may arise due to trauma to zero and enable the patient to recover.
The treatment of fractures can be examined in two sections as surgical and non-surgical treatments. In the non-surgical treatment method, the fracture area is determined with a splint or cast. If necessary, the position of the fracture is corrected closedly before the determination.
If certain conditions have occurred in the fracture case, surgical treatments should be considered.
For surgical treatment:
- Fractures that cannot be maintained in position with a splint or cast
- Fractures that have not healed or have healed incorrectly after non-surgical treatment
