Improve your quality of life with knee replacement surgery
Op. Dr. Serhan Yağdı shared important information about knee replacement surgery, one of the effective methods to address knee problems caused by wear, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or trauma.
Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Serhan Yağdı stated that over time, severe damage may occur in the knees due to wear, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or trauma, which can lead to severe pain, restricted mobility, and a significant decrease in quality of life.
“Knee replacement surgery is performed especially on patients with advanced joint damage who struggle with daily activities and do not benefit from other treatment methods (medication, physical therapy, etc.),” said Yağdı, adding:
“Although it is generally preferred for patients aged 60 and above, in some special cases it can also be applied to younger patients.”
SURGERY AND RECOVERY PROCESS
Highlighting that knee replacement surgery is a surgical procedure lasting about 1–2 hours, Yağdı stated, “In this operation, performed under general or spinal anesthesia, the damaged joint surfaces are removed and replaced with an artificial joint prosthesis made of metal and polyethylene.”
Pointing out that the recovery process may vary from person to person, Yağdı said, “On the first day after surgery, the patient is made to stand and begins walking with support. In the first few weeks, a walker or crutches are used. Within 6 to 8 weeks, patients are usually able to perform daily activities. Full recovery and maximum functional gain take approximately 3 to 6 months.”
Dr. Yağdı also emphasized the importance of patients continuing physical therapy regularly after the surgery and not neglecting follow-up visits.
